What is this article about?
Some rooms on campus are pre-configured as Smart Classrooms, rooms with built in audio/video equipment. The equipment installed in a specific room depends upon the room's tier. This article will provide an overview on the different tier's available and the equipment available in them.
How do I find what I'm looking for?
The equipment depends on the room's tier. Tiers range from 1, general classrooms, to 3, video conference rooms. Higher tiers have all the capabilities and equipment of the lower tiers. Many rooms have video teleconference capabilities that you can request through OIT Video Conference Services.
Tier I
General Classroom for showing media on projectors or videos on DVD. Bring your own laptop.
Purpose/Function
- Basic AV presentation
- Internet material
- Enable viewing of PowerPoint and other computer material from personal laptops
- Enable viewing of DVD material
Equipment
- Blackboard / Whiteboard
- Data / Video Projector
- Projection Screen
- Cables for laptop connection
- DVD/Blu-Ray Player
- Audio System
- Network Port
Tier II
Sympodium rooms for medium classrooms or auditoriums. Document camera/visualizer and built-in computers. Includes everything from Tier I.
Purpose/Function
- Ability to view and manipulate computer materials from personal laptops or resident computer
- Digital ink via tablet or smartboard
- Ability to project and view physical 2D objects (paper) and 3D objects
- Ability to save smartboard/tablet presentations

- Integrated Centralized Control Point
- Zoned Lighting
- Wireless Access Point
- On-Campus Telephone for Tech Support
- Infra-Red Security Camera(s)
Tier III
Video conference rooms for large classrooms or auditoriums. Present rich content locally and to remote locations. Includes everything from Tier I and II.
Purpose/Function
- Ability to deliver instruction and materials to remote locations that are capable of video teleconferencing

- Two-Camera Video
- Conference System
- Second Display for Conferencing
- Multiple Microphones for Video Conference equipment

Please see the attached Excel spreadsheet (in the 'Files' section of this article) for a list of Tier Level I, II, and III rooms. This will tell you the location, room capacity, seating type, and available technology in each room.
