Why Use E-Verify
Currently, E-Verify is not used unilaterally across the University of Alaska. There are two primary reasons that a department may choose to enroll in the E-Verify program:
-
They are awarded a grant or other federal funding that has the E-Verify requirement written into the contract
-
They want the flexibility to employ F-1 Visa holders who are working under a STEM OPT extension
Once a department chooses to participate in E-Verify, they must remain in that program indefinitely. A list of current E-Verify departments is maintained in LawLogix. Please contact the Personnel Team for more information.
How Does it Work
All employees that are hired into an E-Verify department will submit an I-9 form like any other new hire. Their information from the I-9 will be transmitted to USCIS. This is done automatically through an integration between LawLogix and E-Verify.
Setting up a New E-Verify Department
Once a department moves to being an E-Verify participant, there are a few things that need to happen. The Personnel team will work with your department to do all of the following:
-
All HRCs assisting with the TKL will need E-Verify Training
-
The TKL location parameters are updated in LawLogix
-
All new hire employees will immediately start being verified through E-Verify
-
A roster of employees will be provided to the department
-
All employees in the department will complete a new I-9 that will be verified through E-Verify (this must be completed within six months)
The first step is for Personnel to arrange a consultation with the department moving into E-Verify. During that meeting, we’ll go over the expectations and responsibilities. We’ll also discuss the timing of changes so they don’t negatively impact the department. All I-9s initiated must be completed within 30 days, or they will expire.
If you are ready to get set up with E-Verify, please email the Personnel Team and we’ll get a consultation scheduled.
