Overview
In the context of asset management, normalized product names refers to the process of standardizing names of products, software, or hardware to ensure consistency and accuracy within the system. This standardization helps improve data quality, reduce errors, reduce duplicates, and facilitates reporting and analysis.
Normalization Rules
There are a variety of tools and techniques that can be used to standardized product names. In general the following are used with the ESM system.
- In general drop (i.e. do not include) the manufacturer's name from the model (e.g. "Optiplex 7780" not "Dell Optiplex 7780")
- The manufacturer name is captured in a specific attribute.
- Some manufacturer's include their name/abbreviation as part of the product (e.g. LG gram) in which case the manufacturer name is retained.
- Use the vendor's descriptive advertised/marketing name (e.g. "ThinkPad P51 (Type 20HH, 20HJ)" not "20HJS0ET00").
- Use descriptive unique labels (e.g. "Mac mini (2023 with M2)" not "Mac mini").
