Using the Duo MFA Prompt

Body

Overview

The University of Alaska uses Duo Security (Duo) as the Mutli-Factor Authentication (MFA) for securing services such as UA Online, UA Learning Management System (LMS) (also known as UA Blackboard), Google Workspace @ UA, Banner, DegreeWorks, MyUA, etc. By setting up MFA, you add an extra layer of security to your UA account sign-in. For example, you first specify your password and, when prompted, you also type a dynamically generated verification code provided by an authenticator app sent to your phone.

Note
The Duo Prompt lets you choose how to verify your identity each time you log in.

What materials do I need?

  • The smartphone, tablet, or another device you configured for use with Duo
  • A supported web browser

Supported Browsers
ChromeFirefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and Internet Explorer 8 or later. Some browsers do not support all of Duo's authentication devices (for example, Security Keys won't work with Internet Explorer). For the widest compatibility with Duo's authentication methods, we recommend recent versions of Chrome and Firefox.

Authenticating with the Duo Prompt

  1. After completing Duo enrollment, the Duo Prompt will appear the next time you perform a browser-based login to a web service or application protected with Duo. Duo sets the default device to what Duo considers to be the most secure. If you have more than one device enrolled, like a mobile phone and a hardware token, the device selector will be available using the Other options link in the prompt.
