Overview
A project request is a preliminary proposal to accomplish some specific work/goal, and acts as a crucial first step in project management, capturing high-level details like purpose, scope, outcomes, and how it would benefit the department/organization which allows organizations to assess, prioritize, and manage the entire pipeline of potential projects before they become official projects. Using standardized intake forms and processes streamline requests, increases visibility, and ensure resources aren't overextended.
While specific steps may vary between departments using the Enterprise Service Management (ESM) system for project management, the generalized process is:
- Submission: Project sponsor submits an idea via the applicable project request form.
- Review/Assessment: The project request is reviewed/assessed by the department for strategic fit, feasibility, timeline, and resources.
- Approval/Rejection: Approved requests become formal projects; rejected ones do not. Typically at this stage the project request is converted to a project within ESM.
- Execution: Approved requests are the foundation for kicking off the actual project.
- Closeout: Once a project has accomplished its stated goals it typically goes through a project closeout process, and is then closed.
