Install Toad Data Point for macOS

Overview

Toad Data Point for macOS is a data query and analysis tool from Quest. It lets individuals connect to many different data sources, build SQL queries, explore relationships in data, and create reports from one interface. It is mainly used for data access, preparation, and reporting. Analysts and business users use it to query databases, combine data from multiple sources, clean and transform results, automate routine tasks, and generate insights more quickly without switching between several tools.

University employees can use the Iru Self Service application to install Toad Data Point for macOS on university-owned Macs that are connected to the Iru Endpoint Management system. This article will walk you though the process of accessing the installer in Iru Self Service, installing the software, and launching the application for the first time.

How do I use this technology?

Use Iru Self Service to Install Toad Data Point

  1. On your university-owned Mac, open the Iru Self Service application.
    • On the menu bar, click the Iru icon, then click Iru Self Service.
    • Open the Applications folder, then double-click the Iru Self Service application.
  2. In the left menu, click Database.
  3. In the list of applications click Install under the Toad Data Point for Mac.

    Tip
    If you do not see Toad Data Point for Mac under the list of available software, contact your IT support desk for assistance.
  4. The Install button will change to a installation progress circle as Iru begins the installation process. This will take some time.

  5. Once Iru has completed the preliminary install the button will change to Reinstall.

Launch Toad Data Point for the First Time

The current version of Toad Data Point for macOS is port of the Windows application running in a self-contained Windows virtual environment managed by the Crossover/Wine platform. Accordingly the first time a person launches the Toad Data Point application it goes through a few profile-specific installation steps. These steps may take a few minutes depending on several factors.

Important
The following process only occurs at first launch for each person using Toad on the Mac.
  1. Open the Applications folder.
  2. Double-click the Toad Data Point application.

  3. Toad Data Point will automatically open the Setup - .NET Framework version 4.8 installer.
  4. At the License Agreement screen select I accept the agreement then click Next.

  5. The .NET 4.0 and .NET 4.8 Framework installers will be downloaded and installed. This will take some time, and various dialog windows will appear.

  6. Once .NET Framework has been installed, you may be prompted to Allow Toad Data Point to find devices on local networks? Click Don't Allow.

  7. The Toad Data Point 2026 application splash screen will be displayed.

  8. Toad Data Point window will shortly open.

Tip
The Toad application window typically opens somewhat off-screen with no apparent ability to reposition the window. This can be easily corrected following the directions in the Adjust Toad Data Point for macOS Application Widow knowledge base article.

Next Steps

Now that Toad Data Point for Mac is installed you can access the Banner, or Banner Reports system by double-clicking the applicable link in the Navigation Manager on the left. You will be prompted to enter your Banner username/password, and if this is your computer, and user profile you have the option to save your credentials to make connecting quicker the next time.

Support Ending for Intel-based Apps

The current version of Toad Data Point for Mac will cause a notification dialog to appear after installation on Apple Silicon based systems warning that "This version of Toad Data Point includes a component that will not work with a future release of macOS." You can close this window without concern at this point.

Removable Volume Prompt

If there is a removable drive (e.g. USB thumb drive, external hard drive, etc.) connected to your Mac when you launch Toad Data Point you may see a prompt asking Toad Data Point would like to access files on a removable volume. You can safely click Don't Allow.

Toad Version Compatibility

Toad software (such as Toad for Oracle or Toad Data Point) maintains strict version compatibility rules for its proprietary file types. While basic SQL files are universally compatible, advanced functional files often have specific requirement.

File Type Compatibility

  • SQL Files (.sql, .txt): Standard text-based query files are universally compatible across all versions of Toad and other SQL editors.
  • Query Builder Files (.tsm): These files contain visual query metadata. They are generally forward compatible (older files open in newer versions); however, files created in newer versions may not open in older versions if they utilize new engine features.
  • Automation Scripts (.tas): Scripts are strictly compatible with the version in which they were created. To use them in a newer version, you must perform a one-way upgrade.
  • Workbook/Project Files: Files created in Toad Data Point (TDP) version 6.4 or higher are typically not backward compatible with version 6.3 or earlier due to component upgrades and new functionality.

Version Upgrading Rules

  • Forward Compatibility: Newer versions of Toad can typically open files from previous versions, but they may prompt you to Upgrade the file to the current format.
  • One-Way Conversion: Once an automation script or workbook is upgraded and saved in a newer version, it cannot be opened in an older version of Toad.
  • Side-by-Side Installation: Toad supports side-by-side installations of different versions (e.g., v. 2025 R2 and v. 2026 R1) or different "bitness" (32-bit and 64-bit), which can help manage compatibility during transitions.
