Mailman Notice - Too Many Recipients

Overview

When sending a message to a Mailing List Mailman conducts several checks to determine if the message should be posted to the list. If you receive a message similar to the following:

Your mail to 'List-Name' with the subject

    Message Topic Header Here

Is being held until the list moderator can review it for approval.

The reason it is being held:

Too many recipients to the message

This message is normally seen if the person sending the original message adds additional email address to the To, and/or Cc fields, in addition to the address of the mailing list. Each Mailman list has a limit to the total number of recipients associated with a message as an anti-spamming measure. The mailing list itself counts as one address. The default limit is 10, so if someone emails the list, and includes 9 other address (making a total of 10 recipients), this would cause this notification message to be delivered to the message sender.

Individuals that sent the original message can either wait for the list's Moderator, or Administrator to approve the message held for moderation, or as an alternative they can resend the message with fewer email address in the new messages recipient fields.

List Administrator's may adjust the limit for the list's they're responsible for via the following steps:

  1. Open the list's Admin page.
  2. Under Configuration Categories click Privacy Options.
  3. Click Recipient filters.
  4. Scroll-down to the option labeled Ceiling on acceptable number of recipients for a posting (aka max_num_recipients).
  5. Adjust the value to the desired limit.
  6. Click the Submit Your Changes button to save the changes.
  7. After the page has refreshed, click the Logout button to exit the list's Admin page.
