Install a New Digital Sign

Overview

Digital signage enhances the experience of University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) students, faculty, staff, and visitors by delivering targeted messages to campus audiences. Campus departments can manage communications, including setting scheduled date/times to start and end specific content. Furthermore, University Police Department (UPD), or Emergency Management can send emergency communications to targeted locations, or an entire campus with ease.

UAA departments interested in deploying a new, or upgrading an existing, digital sign can submit a Digital Signage request anytime. You will be contacted to discuss content management details, establish appropriate hardware elements, coordinate logistics, and answer any further questions.

Equipment Standards

The following display standards are based upon equipment designed to run for extended periods for years as is common when used as digital signs, as well as supporting other commercial features such as auto power-on/off based on scheduled hours. Displays commonly used for home theater/TV watching are typically not rated for extended operational periods and are not supported.

Hardware Lifecycle

The recommended commercial grade displays typically come with a 3-year warranty, and frequently last several years after the manufacture warranty period has expired. The Apple TV, and iPad hardware frequently lasts for many years; however, the limiting factor on these devices is Apple's support period for the devices operating system (i.e. iOS, tvOS) which is typically 5-7 years. Once an iPad, or Apple TV no longer receives security updates from Apple they are no longer supported by the Digital Signage service. Departments should expect to refresh signage hardware about every 6 years, although displays connected to Apple TV boxes may be replaced on a longer cycle if the existing display still functions, and has minimum burn-in.
