Overview
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) regarding the MATLAB software by MathWorks.
In this article:
Do you provide MATLAB for free?
MATLAB is available to active University of Alaska (UA) students, staff, or faculty for individual use. The MATLAB licenses are managed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) Nanook Technology Services (NTS).
How can I download the MATLAB software?
Please visit UAF NTS's Software Catalog page, and under the Scientific section, click the MATLAB (Windows and macOS) link for up-to-date instructions. If you require further assistance, you must contact the UAF NTS Service Desk directly, as we do not provide support for MATLAB licensing.

What happens to my free license after I leave the University?
After leaving the university, you will no longer have access to the free license associated with your university identity. You can choose to continue the subscription on your own. However, you will be solely responsible for the subscription costs, as we or UAF NTS do not provide any discounts.
I cannot run MATLAB on my computer. Is there another way to access MATLAB for free?
We have worked with the UAA College of Engineering (CoEng) on setting up virtual computers that contain MATLAB, available for free for active CoEng students. To learn more, please visit the following Knowledge articles:
Additionally, the UAA CoEng has an open-computer lab with MATLAB pre-installed on the computers.
I am a UAA employee. How can I obtain a MATLAB license for non-individual use?
You must coordinate with your departmental admin and submit a Software Request ticket.
What are some other alternatives to MATLAB?
Please reach out to your College of Engineering instructor for free alternatives to MATLAB. UAA IT Services and UAF NTS do not offer or have the expertise to provide MATLAB alternatives.
