Microsoft Office Licensing: Volume vs. Office 365 for macOS

Overview

Microsoft has two distinct offerings of their Office suite: Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise (aka Office 365 ProPlus), and Office 2019 Volume License. There are some feature differences between the two which are summarized below.

 

Note
This guide is for macOS versions of Office; however, the Windows version has similar differences between versions.

Licensing All students, staff, and faculty can install and activate Microsoft 365 on up to 5 different devices at a time. Can be installed on any UA owned computer.
Feature Updates Receives the latest features, and updates as well as security updates and bug fixes. Receives security updates, and bug fixes only.
Use Cases
  • Real-time collaboration in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Computers where there is a primary user (not a shared computer)
  • Computers that have regular access to network/Internet
  • Enhanced content creation tools
  • Support for Researcher in Word and OneNote
  • Real-time collaboration in Word only
  • Shared computers (e.g. Kiosks, Labs, etc.)
  • Computers that are offline, or not connected to any network

Find Current Office Version

  1. Open any Office application (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). In this example we'll be using Outlook.
  2. In the top-left corner, click the Outlook menu.

  3. Click About Outlook.

  4. The version of Microsoft Office installed will appear next to the License.
