Overview
This article will show how to include the @ character in the content of a CMS page. The University’s CMS software considers the @ character a special character, which can lead to errors and confusion.
What materials do I need?
- Computer
- CMS editor permission
How do I use this technology?
The University’s CMS software considers the @ character a special character, which it interprets as a programming directive, instead of regular content.
It is important to note that this only applies if the @ character is by itself, or at the beginning of a word. If you are listing an email address, for example, there is no need to include 2 @ characters.
Here are a few examples of content that would cause an error in the CMS:
Login using your @alaska.edu email address.

If you have incorrectly used the @ character within the content of a page, you would see the following error message when attempting to view the page on the live website:
It appears that you've included an @ symbol within the content of your page.
The @ symbol is a special character - you must use it twice in a row for it to show up correctly (e.g.: @@).
How to solve this error message
As indicated by the above error message, the solution is to use the @ character twice in a row, which tells the CMS software that it should be treated as regular content, instead of a programming directive. So, the above examples would become:
Login using your @@alaska.edu email address.
