Domain Name System (DNS)

The Domain Name System (DNS) translates computer names to Internet Protocol addresses. This naming structure makes it easier to access resources on the Internet or University network. Additionally, host and domain names in DNS can have a significant marketing and branding value. Host or domain names under alaska.edu are reserved for names of organizational sub-divisions or institution-wide activities/services.

Under most circumstances, new University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) websites will be created as part of the uaa.alaska.edu (e.g. uaa.alaska.edu/new-site, or uaa.alaska.edu/about/new-site). Individuals requesting a new UAA domain must submit a DNS request form, and adhere to the DNS guidelines below. DNS requests are reviewed by IT Services to ensure that each reflects an appropriate and effective domain, and requests may require up to 14 days for approval.
