Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

The University of Alaska provides multi-factor authentication (MFA) to help protect UA students and employees and the data they have access to.

MFA combines multiple elements (or factors) unique to you to protect your account. These elements can include things you know (e.g. a password or PIN), things you have (e.g. a smart phone or security key), or things that you are (e.g. a fingerprint or other biometric information). At UA, the first factor is a password that only the account owner should know. The second factor is a device, such as a smart phone; tablet; or token, that the account owner has possession of.

MFA protects against phishing, social engineering, password brute-force attacks and attackers exploiting weak or stolen credentials. With MFA, the password alone is no longer enough to access an account, dramatically improving account security.
