Set GlobalProtect to use Windows Default Browser

Overview

The following article will provide directions on setting GlobalProtect to use a default browser on Windows computers.

In this article:

What materials do I need?

  • Windows computer running Windows 10 or later
  • Stable internet connection
  • Web browser (i.e. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, etc)
  • UA username
  • Current UA password
  • Duo MFA device

Procedure

Important
Before you proceed with the instructions, please review them carefully to ensure that you do not skip any steps or encounter any issues. However, if you are uncomfortable doing these steps on your own, please submit a ticket or reach out to the UAA Technical Support Center and they will perform a remote screen share with you.
  1. Set up your preferred web browser as your Default Browser: How to Change Your Default Web Browser article by PCMag.
  2. Download GlobalProtect by following the instructions in our article: Install GlobalProtect VPN for Windows.
  3. After downloading the GlobalProtect64.msi file, proceed to the next steps.
  4. Right-click on the Start button (the Windows logo) at the bottom of your screen.
  5. In that menu, left-click on Terminal. However, you might have an alternative name for Terminal on other versions of Windows, such as Command Prompt or Windows PowerShell.

  6. Type in  cd Downloads.
  7. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  8. Paste the following command: msiexec.exe /i GlobalProtect64.msi DEFAULTBROWSER=YES

  9. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
  10. The GlobalProtect install windows will open. On this window, under Select whether you want to repair or remove GlobalProtect, click Remove GlobalProtect.
  11. Click the Finish button.

  12. When the Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device prompt appears, click Yes.

  13. The Removing GlobalProtect screen should now appear.

  14. After the software has been successfully removed, click Close.

  15. Go back to the Command Prompt window and press the up arrow. This will bring up the previously entered msi command. Press enter.

  16. Click on Next to install GlobalProtect.

  17. At the Select Installation Folder prompt click Next

  18. At the Confirm Installation prompt click Next

  19. When the Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device prompt appears, click Yes.
    Run this program
     
  20. GlobalProtect will begin installing.

  21. After the software has been successfully installed, click Close.
