Map a UAA Shared Drive on macOS

Overview

UAA employees on macOS can connect to a UAA network drive (also known as file shares and shared drives) associated with their department or their UA account.

In this article:

What materials do I need?

  • macOS computer (i.e., MacBook Air/Pro, iMac, etc.)
  • Approved access to the shared drive(s) from your department
  • Shared drive address (typically starts with smb://anc-filesrv01.ua.ad.alaska.edu/)
  • Connection to the on-campus UAA network
  • UA username
  • Current UA password

How do I use this technology?

Map the network drive

  1. Confirm the device is connected to the on-campus UAA network
    1. If you are off-campus, you must connect to UAA GlobalProtect VPN
  2. Navigate to Finder.
Finder icon on the task bar

  3. At the very top of the screen, click Go.
"Go" menu at the top of the screen

  4. Click Connect to Server...
"Connect to server..." button in the "Go" menu

  5. Type the path of the network drive or copy and paste the path in the first text field.
    • UAA network drives typically start with smb://anc-filesrv01.ua.ad.alaska.edu/
Example of the "Connect to Server" window

  6. Click the Connect button.
  7. The system will then ask for your UA credentials.
  8. For the Name field, type UA\ first then your UA username (e.g., UA\jsmith1)
  9. For the Password, type your UA password.
  10. Click the Connect button.
  11. In Finder, the network drive should now appear under Locations on the left-hand side.

Connect to the network drive upon login (optional)

Unlike on Windows, macOS does not automatically map the network drive upon login. To add this feature, follow these steps:

  1. Visit the following Apple Support page and select your macOS version on the top: https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/open-items-automatically-when-you-log-in-mh15189/mac
  2. When adding the Login Item in the Finder window, select the network share folder under Locations on the left-hand side.
  3. Click the Open button on the bottom right of that window to save the settings.
