View Mailing List Membership Roster

Overview

It is not uncommon for mailing lists to have hundred, if not thousands of addresses subscribed. List administrators attempting to manage their list may find it a bit cumbersome to use the Membership Management interface in these cases. Mailman does provide a means to display a roster of all current members. This view is not directly linked from the list's admin page.

How do I use this technology?

Access List's Roster

To access your Mailing List roster, please do the following.

  1. Open a Web browser and go to https://lists.uaa.alaska.edu/mailman/admin/listname, where listname is the name of the mailing list for which you are the owner.
  2. Enter your administrator password into the List Administrator Password field, and then click Let me in...

  3. After you have successfully signed into the list's Admin page the General Options page will be displayed.

  4. In the Web browser's address field change the URL from:

    https://lists.uaa.alaska.edu/mailman/admin/listname

    to:

    https://lists.uaa.alaska.edu/mailman/roster/listname

Notice that we changed the text "admin" to "roster" in the URL. Everything else should remain the same.

    Important
You must login to the list's admin page first, otherwise you will receive an error message similar to the following when you attempt to access the list's membership roster.

  5. Mailman will now display the list's subscribers page.

The list's subscribers are grouped in a table with two columns labeled as Non-digested Members of listname or Digested Members of listname. The difference between the two is that non-digested members will receive individual messages as they are posted to the list, whereas digested members will receive messages in a batch based on the digest settings defined by the list's administrator.

Save List's Roster

Once you have accessed the list's roster page you can copy the addresses and use them as a means of performing mass subscription, or mass removal of list members, among other tasks.

Note
Be aware the subscriber list is presented as an unordered list with each address as a hyperlink and the actual address obfuscated somewhat by the '@' character being substituted by ' at '.

  1. Highlight the list of addresses in the non-digested members of listname column.
  2. Copy the highlighted text.
  3. Open a text editor such as Notepad (Windows), or TextEdit (macOS). It is recommended to avoid the use of a word processor such as Microsoft Word.
  4. Within the text editor open a new blank file.
  5. Paste the copied text.

By pasting the addresses into a text editor you remove all of the hyperlinks as well as the formatting from the unordered list.
  6. If there are subscribers listed under the digested members of listname column make sure to copy these as well by repeating steps 2 - 5.
  7. Use the text editor's Find and Replace commands to swap " at " to "@" to convert the list to email addresses.

This will take the list from:

    person1 at alaska.edu
    person2 at alaska.edu

    To:

    person1@alaska.edu
    person2@alaska.edu

  8. Save the text file, and use as desired.
