Install Microsoft 365 apps on a personal computer

Overview

The Microsoft 365 Apps for Enterprise allows current University of Alaska students, staff, and faculty to download the latest versions of Microsoft 365 software at no cost.

Important
Before you proceed with the instructions, please review them carefully to ensure that you do not skip any steps and encounter any issues.

What materials do I need?

  • Internet connection
  • Web browser (i.e. Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari, etc)
  • Windows or macOS computer that meets minimum system requirements
  • Active UA account (current student/employee)
  • UA email address
  • Working UA password

 

How do I use this technology?

Installation

Note
The following steps and screenshots were written for Windows, but they should be similar on macOS.
  1. Open a web browser.
  2. In your address bar, type in https://portal.office.com
  3. On the Microsoft Sign In page, type in your UA email address.

  4. Click the Next button.
  5. On the Enter password page, enter your UA password.
  6. Click the Sign In button.
  7. A Stay signed in? prompt may appear. You can click the Yes or No button.
  8. On the top-right of the page, click the Install apps button.
  9. Click Microsoft 365 apps in the sub-menu.

  10. Your browser will begin to download the installation wizard.
  11. Once fully downloaded, follow the prompt on the web page to begin the installation.
     
    Note
    • The prompt will depend on what web browser and computer you're using. For example, if you're on a Windows computer using Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge, you will see the picture below.
    • If you cannot find the file, navigate to your Downloads folder (it will typically be there).

  12. Wait for the installer to finish.
  13. After installation, you will see this success message. Click the Close button to continue.

Activation

  1. Open any Microsoft 365 app. In this example, Word is opened.
  2. Upon launch, a window will come up asking you to Sign in. Click the Sign in or create account button.

  3. On the Activate Office window, type in your UA email address.

  4. Click the Next button.
  5. On the Enter password page, type in your UA password.
  6. Click the Sign In button.
  7. For Windows users, you will receive a prompt below outlined in steps 7a and 7b. Follow steps 7a and 7b. Otherwise, macOS users can skip to step 8.
    1. Uncheck Allow my organization to manage my device.
    2. Click No, sign in to this app only to continue.

  8. Congratulations! Your Microsoft 365 apps are now activated and ready to use.
  9. The other Microsoft 365 apps should not require you to sign in again, but if it does, return to step 2 under the Activation section.

 

Verify Activation

  1. To verify if your app Microsoft 365 is activated with your UA account, open any Microsoft 365 app. In this example, Word is opened.
  2. On the bottom-left of the Home page, click Account.

  3. Under Product Information on the right, you should see Subscription Product for: is set to your UA email.
