Project Risk Statuses

Overview

Within project management the risk status refers to  the current conditions or progress of a specific risk. It helps the project team understand where each risk stands in the risk management process, enabling them to focus on the most critical issues. Risks can be either threats (hurt), or opportunities (help) to the project

The University of Alaska (UA) Enterprise Service Management (ESM) system supports the following risk statuses:

ESM Risk Statuses
Status Description
Identified The risk has been identified. This is the initial state of new risks.
Assessed

The risk has been evaluated for:

  • Probability (or likelihood) that the risk will become realized
  • Impact that the risk would have on the project (for good, or bad) if it occurs.
  • Urgency is derived from the probability and impact of the risk
Controlled A risk response has been identified to reduce the likelihood or consequences of a threat, or take advantage of an opportunity; however, the risk is not yet resolved (closed).
Realized The risk has become a reality, meaning the uncertain event or condition has occurred and is now an actual issue.
Closed A risk should be closed when the probability of it occurring is zero (0).
Postponed A risk has been identified, but not immediately addressed, often due to resource constraints or other priorities, with the intention of being addressed later.
