Add Blackout Widow Entry

Overview

The Enterprise Service Management (ESM) system Blackout windows can have entries added as needed to accommodate alignment with business needs.

Important
Blackout widows apply only to Change or Release tickets within the ticketing application in which they are created.

What materials do I need?

  • Internet connectivity
  • A web browser
  • ESM App Admin, or Enterprise Admin privileges within the applicable ticketing application.

How do I use this technology?

Access to ESM Ticketing Application Blackout Window

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Navigate to the UA ESM website.
  3. Login to the UA ESM with your UA Email address and password.
  4. Click View Applications.
  5. Click the desired ticketing application (e.g. UA, IT, etc.).
  6. In the Ticketing Application tab, click the Settings (e.g. Gear/Sprocket) icon.
  7. Click Blackout Windows.

Add Blackout Window Entry

  1. Click the name of the desired Blackout Window.
  2. Click Edit.
  3. Click + Add Entry.
  4. An Add Entry dialog window will open.
  5. In the Name field, enter a short description of the entry (e.g. 2025 Fall Semester Start)
  6. In the Occurrence drop-down field, select the type of entry to be created. Options available are:
    • Once - Allows the selection of specific Day (e.g. 8/25/2025), and Start/End Time (e.g. 11:30am - 3:30pm) or All Day.
    • Daily - Allows selection of a date range over which the recurrence will take place. If no value is provided, the recurrence will not be capped in that direction (i.e. if the To field is not set, then there is no end date for the entry).
      • The To date is not inclusive. Therefore, if a To is set, the maximum resulting end date/time will be the previous day at 11:59 p.m.
    • Weekly - Allows the selection of specific Day(s) of the Week, Weekly Interval (e.g. every other week), Over a specified date range, and with Start/End Time or All Day.
      • The To date is not inclusive. Therefore, if a To is set, the maximum resulting end date/time will be the previous day at 11:59 p.m.
      • For weekly recurrence, a starting date is required to determine the first week if certain weeks are being skipped
    • Monthly - Allows the selection of specific Week(s) of the Month, Day of the Week, Over a specified date range, and with Start/End Time or All Day.
      • The To date is not inclusive. Therefore, if a To is set, the maximum resulting end date/time will be the previous day at 11:59 p.m.
    • Yearly - Allows the selection of a specific Month and Day of each year the event will take place, and with Start/End Time or All Day. If February 29th is specified, February 28th will be used on all non-leap years.
  7. Enter the values associated with the type of occurrence selected.
  8. Click Save to close the entry window.
  9. Click To Detail to go back to the summary view of the Blackout Window.
  10. Review the list of entries to ensure correctness.
  11. Click the Close (e.g. X ) button to close the side panel.

For support, requests may be submitted anytime using the appropriate Enterprise Service Management form. Requests generate a Ticket which will be worked in order received and urgency by IT Employees with the knowledge and permissions to assist with the request.
