Create ESM Blackout Window

Overview

The Enterprise Service Management (ESM) system offers the use of Blackout windows within a ticketing applications to represent environment-wide ranges of time where changes should not be made. An example is semester change freeze blackout window with several entries inside to represent the start and end of a semester in which changes are not to be made.

Important
Blackout widows apply only to Change or Release tickets within the ticketing application in which they are created.

What materials do I need?

  • Internet connectivity
  • A web browser
  • ESM App Admin, or Enterprise Admin privileges within the applicable ticketing application.

How do I use this technology?

  1. Open a web browser.
  2. Navigate to the UA ESM website.
  3. Login to the UA ESM with your UA Email address and password.
  4. Click View Applications.
  5. Click the desired ticketing application (e.g. UA, IT, etc.).
  6. In the Ticketing Application tab, click the Settings (e.g. Gear/Sprocket) icon.
  7. Click Blackout Windows.
  8. Review existing Blackout Windows, if any, and determine one should be created, or an existing one edited.
  9. Click + New Blackout Window.
  10. The New Blackout Window pane will appear.
  11. In the Name field, enter a succinct descriptive name for the blackout window.
  12. By default the Active box is selected, it is probably desired to leave this so.
  13. Review the Time Zone field, and ensure it is set correctly. It defaults to Alaska time zone.
  14. In the Description field, enter details describing the blackout window such as business practices, generalized date ranges, etc.
  15. Click Save.
